EAL Gold for Oxford primary school

We are delighted that our partner school New Marston Primary in Oxford has been awarded an EAL Quality Mark Gold Award by The EAL Academy.

The EAL Academy are school improvement specialists and leaders in the fields of academic literacy, ethnic minority achievement and English as an additional language. Their EAL Quality Mark is an award made to schools on their achievements in meeting the needs of pupils learning English as an additional language.

Jacari have had a long partnership with New Marston Primary, providing one-to-one tuition to their EAL pupils, and we know how dedicated they are to their pupils' success. They respond flexibly to the changing and diverse communities they serve in Oxford with pupils coming from a range of backgrounds, including children of Syrian refugees, visiting academics and doctoral students and the long-standing local Pakistani community.

The EAL Academy were particularly impressed with how New Marston planned explicitly for the needs of their EAL pupils and built in methods for teaching English vocabulary into the curriculum. Staff also demonstrated a strong understanding of the characteristics of the first languages of their pupils and adapted their teaching approaches based on these.

They also highlighted the important role of tuition provided by Jacari volunteers in supporting New Marston pupils to build their confidence and language skills outside of school. From everyone at Jacari, we wanted to congratulate New Marston on this achievement!
