Jacari receives funding from Postcode Local Trust

We are delighted to receive a grant of £20,000 from Postcode Local Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of the People's Postcode Lottery.
The grant will go towards funding our Jacari Bristol tuition programme in the 2022/23 academic year, helping us to provide free tutoring to young people who use English as an additional language living in areas such as Easton and Lawrence Hill, where 39% of residents were born outside of the UK and 30% don’t speak English as their main language. We work in partnership with six schools in these areas who help us to identify the children and young people most in need of extra tuition. Many of the young people we support are refugees and asylum-seekers and have recently arrived in the UK.
Jacari's aim is to help them improve their confidence and language and communication skills so they can adapt to life in the UK, make friends and thrive at school. Our small team at Jacari Bristol recruit and train volunteers, most of whom are students at the University of Bristol and UWE, and match them to a young person in need of tuition. Our volunteer tutors visit their tutee at home or in their school every week for fun tutoring sessions, helping them practise their English, develop their language skills and build their confidence. Our tutors act as a mentor and friend to their tutee, giving them regular support and helping them achieve their potential.
We also organise extracurricular activities for the young people we support, their families and our volunteers. Last year we visited Bristol Zoo and Gardens and We The Curious science museum and ran a fun theatre workshop as part of Bristol Refugee Week. We have plans for a great programme of trips and activities for the 2022/23 academic year.
We are aiming to support over 100 young people in Bristol in the 2022/23 academic year and this grant will go a long way to helping us achieve this. We are so thrilled that the Postcode Local Trust have selected Jacari Bristol to support this year- thank you!
