At Jacari we are proud to be members of The Fair Education Alliance (FEA), a cross-sector coalition of organisations working together to tackle educational inequity.
On 17th February Jacari was represented at the FEA Youth Summit by Amara and Gabby, two young people who are former Jacari pupils. The summit, held in London, was a national gathering bringing together young people aged 11–21 who have faced barriers to education.
Amara and Gabby participated in workshops and discussions, developed leadership and social action skills, and engaged directly with decision makers shaping education policy.
We were pleased that they could represent the experiences of those arriving late into the UK school system, new to English.
Here’s what they said about the day:
Amara (Oxford):
“The day was wonderful!
We gained valuable knowledge on how to work to continue to fulfill Jacari's mission, developed new skills, and connected with many inspiring individuals all working to expand and improve education and educational access.
It was wonderful to speak with other ambassadors about Jacari’s mission. It was incredibly meaningful to hear their personal stories, and discuss how support and services, like those Jacari provides, helped both them and us reach where we are today. It was especially inspiring and hopeful to see the continued work being done to support many more young people in the future, and makes me look forward to all the work Jacari will continue to do in the future.”
Gabby (Bristol):
“We had such a good time and it was really interesting.
Meeting leaders who are actively shaping the future, including voices from the Green Party, reminded me how important youth perspectives are in conversations about education, equality and access.
Experiences like this motivate me to continue advocating for equal access to education and to use my voice to support those who may not always be heard.”
